Description
Aliens vs. Predator #1-4 is the historic four-issue comic book miniseries published by Dark Horse Comicsfrom June to November 1990. Written by Randy Stradley and illustrated by Phill Norwood, this is the definitive crossover that single-handedly birthed the multi-million dollar Alien vs. Predator (AvP) franchise.
The concept was born out of a late-1980s Dark Horse brainstorming session, completely predating and heavily inspiring the 2004 Alien vs. Predator film.
Plot Overview
The Setting: The story is set on the remote planet Ryushi, a harsh desert world colonized by human corporate ranchers who raise cattle-like beasts called Rhynths.
The Catalyst: Unbeknownst to the colonists, Ryushi is a designated hunting ground for the Yautja (Predators). A clan of young Predators drops a payload of Xenomorph (Alien) eggs onto the planet to seed a controlled infestation for a sacred "coming of age" tribal ritual hunt.
The Chaos: The hunt goes horribly wrong. The Xenomorphs multiply far faster than anticipated, forming a massive hive that overruns the human settlement of Prosperity Wells. The human colonists find themselves hopelessly trapped in the crossfire of an interstellar war zone.
The Alliance:Machiko Noguchi, a tough corporate administrator running the colony, is forced to step up to save the survivors. She crosses paths with the leader of the Predators, a seasoned hunter named "Broken Tusk". Recognizing each other's warrior spirit, the human woman and the Predator forge an unforgettable, desperate alliance to destroy the Alien Queen.
Key Features & Legacy
Machiko Noguchi: The series introduces Machiko, who became one of Dark Horse’s most legendary original characters. At the conclusion of the story, Broken Tusk blood-marks her forehead with the emblem of his clan, leading to subsequent series where she actually lives and hunts alongside the Predators.
