Transformers: Beast Wars - The Ascending #1-4 is a
four-issue comic book limited miniseries published by IDW Publishing from October 2007 to January 2008. Written by legendary Transformers scribe
Simon Furman and featuring spectacular, highly detailed artwork by
Don Figueroa and
Guido Guidi, the series serves as a direct canonical sequel to the 2006 comic
Transformers: Beast Wars - The Gathering.
The story heavily bridges the gap between the Western Beast Wars continuity and elements from the Japanese-exclusive animated spin-offs, Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo.
Plot Overview
-
The Chronal Ghost: Following his defeat in The Gathering, the Predacon commander Magmatronexists as a disembodied, non-corporeal entity shifted out of time and space. From this ghostly state, he bears witness to a horrifying vision of Cybertron's immediate future: the unchecked descent into absolute apocalyptic chaos and total destruction.
-
The Gathering Crisis: Powerless to directly interfere, Magmatron works from the shadows to pull together a desperate alliance between his former Maximal enemy, Razorbeast, alongside the heroic Lio Convoy and the elite underground faction known as The Pack.
-
The Shadow of Unicron: The threat is revealed to be Shokaract, a regular Cybertronian soldier who stumbled upon the capsule containing the Anti-Matrix—a vessel harboring the dark life force of the dead planet-eater, Unicron. Imbued with god-like power, Shokaract intends to herald the ascension of the dark god.
-
The Final Stand: While a brutal, massive war erupts on Cybertron against Shokaract's heralds and the Blendtrons, the Maximals on prehistoric Earth fight a tragic final stand, leading to a dimensional, mind-bending climax to sever Unicron's hold on reality.
Key Features & Legacy
-
Japanese Continuity Crossover: The miniseries is highly celebrated by Transformers purists for formally introducing prominent Japanese-exclusive franchise characters—like Lio Convoy, Big Convoy, Magmatron, and Shokaract—directly into Western comic continuity.
- The Unreleased Finale: The Ascending was originally intended to be the second chapter of a planned trilogy. While a third concluding miniseries titled Beast Wars: The Revisiting was fully planned, it was unfortunately permanently canceled by IDW, leaving certain lore threads to be later integrated into broader guidebooks.
